Koi Pond Supplies That You'll Need

When starting out with a new koi pond, you’ll need to get some proper supplies in order to set up your pond successfully.

It’s an exciting project, and when you have a beautiful koi fish pond, it really becomes an integral part of your home, as it is a living breathing creature in itself.

Supplies For The New Koi Pond

One of the first considerations, when looking at supplies, is the size of pond that you want, whether you’re going to have an indoor or outdoor pond (both are possible), and your budget.

It’s a full on type of project as it may involve digging up of your garden, if there isn’t already a koi pond in the home left from the previous owner. This is the situation in most cases. Some people do it themselves, which is time consuming, but this is part of the challenge for some people, as they want to do the construction of the pond as a passionate hobby.

But an alternative would be to pay a garden pond construction company to make you one.

Depending on their knowledge of koi, the pond construction company may have up to date know how about how to properly construct koi ponds in terms of dimensions and contours required, the location of the filter and pump, the requirement for air pumps, bottom drains, netting, etc.

If they don’t, then find another one, or if your own knowledge is good, then you’ll know what your pond will need.

Your supplies therefore could include:

  • Koi pond designs (poor designs can make it difficult to have proper filtration)
  • Construction materials for the pond
  • Bottom drains
  • Ponds filter and pump
  • Pond heating systems
  • Pond de-icers
  • Koi nets
  • Imported Japanese koi or locally farmed koi
  • Koi food
  • UV pond filters

Koi Pond Supplies If You Already Have A Pond

When you already have a koi pond working well, you’ll have 3 aims with your koi pond supplies:

1. To provide supplies that you’ll need to solve an important koi pond problem such as algae blooms, inadequate filtration, or birds attacking your fish.

For example, algae blooms may require additional shade if possible, adequate filtration, vacuuming of debris sludge, ultraviolet sterilizers to reduce bacterial load, or enzyme or salt products.

2. To provide supplies that you need to prevent a problem that has not occurred but probably will.

For example, prolonged winters may require a pond heater to reduce the duration of the winter (if you have extreme winters) to about 2 months of the year. You don’t have to heat the pond in the coldest 2 months of the year, since koi survives well even in freezing conditions, but it is the long duration of cold climates that may require you to use the pond filter a few months on either side, to reduce the overall duration of their exposure to cold. The topic of heaters is widely debated – it’s a heated topic!

3. To provide ongoing supplies such as quality koi fish food. Koi food can vary with the suppliers depending on the season.

For example, in winter, metabolic rates are slower and there’s a lower protein requirement, so you can find winter koi food with lower protein content. Summer is a time of more rapid growth and spawning, and therefore demand a higher protein content diet.
